STEM in Harghita county

Firstly, in a nutshell, let me tell you some basic information on the county I came from. The region is in Romania, up in the Carpathians, full with beautiful landscape and with traditional lifestyle and cultural wealth. The people here make a living mostly from agriculture and forestry, and in the small towns there is some industry, built on the ruins of the socialist large-scale industrial past.  Farmers have small scale businesses, very few have larger plots than 10 ha. We need strong STE(A)M skills in Europe to feed the growth of innovation-intensive sectors in the EU

The CoR opinion led by EPP-CoR member Borboly Csaba, President of the Harghita County Council, on “Strengthening STE(A)M Education in the EU” was unanimously adopted today in the SEDEC Commission meeting and will be presented to the Council of Ministers of Education on 22 May. The opinion focuses on the growing need to better prepare citizens with the skills and knowledge they will need to be successful innovators in a 21st century workforce. The importance of further developing STE(A)M skills in Europe is recognized by the various EU institutions. Local and Regional authorities can play a major role. SEDEC Commission adopts opinions on bioeconomy and STEM education

Developing sustainable bioeconomy strategies in EU regions and strengthening science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education were on the agenda of the CoR’s Commission for Social Policy, Education, Employment, Research and Culture (SEDEC) on 2 April. Members also discussed how cities and regions can contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals related to social policy, education and innovation. The European Commission presented in October 2018 a new strategy to develop sustainable bioeconomy in Europe, which is the subject of a draft opinion prepared by Jacint Horváth (HU/PES), representative of Local Government of Nagykanizsa. The victim of the bear attack from Kőrispatak has died


On 22th of March a 35-year-old man near Kőrispatak was seriously wouded by a bear attack. The beast stroked his chest and upper limbs, and wounded on his neck and head. The unconscious man did not react to the intervention of the rescuers arrived from Székelyudvarhely hospital and finally died in the ambulance during transportation. The case was reported to Csaba Borboly, President of the Council of Harghita County, who followed the case and reported on situation on the community side: They waited for the rescue service to deliver the victim to the University Hospital in Târgu Mureş, but unfortunately the 35-year-old man passed away. Navracsics Tibor: local and regional values strenghten the European Union

Harghita County Council, in cooperation with the European Commission, European Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions organized on 9th of October, within the European Week of Regions and Cities a workshop entitled Brain Drain: a one way ticket? – workshop on youth and workforce migration. The European week is one of the biggest event-series on EU level. The workshop was opened by Iuliu Winkler, Member of the European Parliament.
